All the stages of rapture

According to the desires of Augustus the Strong, elector of Saxony, visitors passing through the halls of his unique treasure-store should experience “all the stages of rapture”. From the 16th century onwards, jewels served the Saxon leaders as currency and decorative value was of secondary importance to them. All that changed, however, at the beginning of the 1720s, when the great German architect Matthaus Daniel Poppelmann was commissioned by Augustus the Strong to develop plans to transform his secret “safe” of treasure into a museum.

Chinese beauty secrets

The Chinese hairpins and decorations assembled in the Hermitage in the 18th century represent a unique collection. The only similar examples known to exist are in the Palace Museums in Taipei and in Beijing. Made from the finest gold filigree wire, which is difficult to see with the naked eye, the metal used in their production is extremely pure and malleable because it is only from such gold that this delicate work can be wrought.

09.04.2008 - Guggenheim Hermitage exhibition space in Las Vegas to close next month
The Art Newspaper can reveal that the Las Vegas exhibition space at the Venetian Resort Hotel Casino operated by the Guggenheim Foundation in New York and the State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg will close early next month when the current show “Modern Masters from the Guggenheim Collection” finishes.
