Coming face-to-face with one of Chuck Close’s massive portraits, one has the feeling of being in the presence of an old friend Р albeit one grown considerably larger since the last time you met. Staring out at the viewer, the sitters wear inscrutable, ambiguous expressions that are nowhere more apparent than in the artist’s recent portraits.

The Board of the Foundation La Biennale di Venezia, chaired by Paolo Baratta, attributed the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement for the 11th International Architecture Exhibition to Frank Gehry.
