20.11.2008 - Watches clock up a record £1.45m

A pair of pocket watches have set a world record after being sold at auction for 2.6 million Swiss francs (£1.45 million).

The mirror-image watches were made in 1815 and presented to Emperor Jiaqing of China by King George III the following year.

The watches were sold by a Chinese collector whose family had owned them for generations. The buyer, also Chinese, was an unidentified private collector Etienne Leménager, of the Geneva auctioneers Antiquorum, said that the watches were in perfect condition, adding: “The paintings were done by Jean-Abraham Lissignol, who was perhaps the greatest painter of animals.”
